The Department of Botany atSiddharth University, Kapilvastu, U.P., was established in 2015 with the visionof fostering excellence in teaching and research in plant sciences. A milestonewas achieved in the academic session 2022–23 with the commencement ofpost-graduate teaching in Botany, adding to the Department’s academic depth andoutreach. In addition, the Department offers a three-year B.Sc. Biologyprogramme (2024–2025) and a four-year B.Sc. Biology programme (2025–2026) atthe undergraduate level, fully aligned with the National Education Policy(NEP-2020). The undergraduate course follows a four-year programmedesigned toprovide both conceptual knowledge and practical skills. The Department alsooffers a Ph.D. programme in Botany, where research scholars are engaged indiverse research areas of plant sciences.
At present, the Department hostsa vibrant academic community of nearly 200 undergraduate students, 40postgraduate students, and 08 research scholars. The teaching faculty comprisesAssociate Professors (01), Assistant Professors (02), and Guest Faculty (04),who are dedicated to mentoring students and shaping their academic andprofessional growth.
The Department has developedexcellent teaching programmes and laboratory facilities that support educationand research in both classical and contemporary domains of Botany. Academic andresearch activities span traditional disciplines such as Cytotaxonomy,Environmental Microbiology, Floristic Studies, Genetics, Plant Breeding, Phytoremediation, Phycology, andStress Physiology. This wide academic coverage reflects the Department’sintegration of conventional botanical sciences with modern research areas.
Research activities in theDepartment are actively supported through funding from diverse agencies,including the ANRF: SERB-SURE scheme, CST-UP, R&D Division of U.P. HigherEducation Department, and the Siddharth University Seed Money Grant. Facultymembers are engaged in externally funded research projects, which have beeninstrumental in advancing the Department’s scientific output. In addition, theDepartment maintains active collaborations with reputed national andinternational institutions such as Banaras Hindu University, CSIR-NBRI, CSIR-CIMAP,BSI, AIIMS, University of Lucknow, University of Patanaand research groups in KRIBB,Republic of Korea and ERCE, Poland. These collaborative initiatives havesubstantially strengthened the Department’s research profile, facilitated thedevelopment of advanced infrastructure, and created enhanced opportunities forboth faculty and students to participate in high-quality, multidisciplinaryresearch.
Though relatively young, theDepartment of Botany at Siddharth University has steadily grown into apromising hub of botanical research and higher education in eastern UttarPradesh. With its blend of quality teaching, expanding collaborations, and aculture of curiosity and innovation, the Department is committed to academicexcellence and to shaping future leaders in the field of plant sciences.
